KTUH History

Kuwait University Herbarium known under the acronym KTUH is the national herbarium of the state of Kuwait. It was founded in 1969 as part of the Botany and Microbiology Department of the College of Science. Since its inception, plant collection expeditions were conducted not only in Kuwait, but to all the countries of the Arabian Peninsula. By the late 1980‘s, the herbarium with around 22,000 specimens considered to have the second best collection of Arabian plants in the world. During the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait (1990), the entire Herbarium and the attached library were taken away to Iraq. After the liberation of Kuwait, the herbarium had to start from scratch and the staff members started collecting plants mostly from Kuwait, with the aim of rebuilding the herbarium.
